A spiral approach to math
The quiz topic was Maclaurin polynomials and the reaction of one of my students was utter blankness. He had no idea. He was lagging behind and hadn't gotten to that section yet. Some students in this predicament begin writing apologetic essays containing various excuses about the sorry state of their lives. Not this boy! He resorted to mesmerism.
No, it didn't work. He did, however, do much better on the second quiz on Maclaurin polynomials. So I guess one of us got through.

With all the calls for allowing students, faculty, and staff to carry guns to campus in the wake of VT tragedy, you're lucky your student only asked for a higher grade via his spirals. Should guns be allowed on campus, one professor said on another blog: "Final" exams would have a whole new meaning!
Read your response to the Dinesh D'Souza/atheists post on Pharyngula and appreciated it very much. Just wanted to drop a line saying "keep up the great work".
